Working in Salem

What we actually run into here.

Salem was a real town once: incorporated in 1846, big enough to make a run at the county seat in 1865. Today it's an unincorporated stretch of Lee County along US 280 and 431, with Wacoochee Elementary on Lee Road 254 and the volunteer fire department on Highway 280. What it has plenty of is land. Recent listings run from a three-and-a-half-acre lot in Haley Woods to more than thirty-six acres in Sedona Ridge, and septic is the norm. Some homes are on public water, some on private wells.

The houses on those lots are mostly all-electric. A heat pump handles both seasons, sometimes with propane for a fireplace or backup heat. In Salem that heat pump earns its keep in July, not January. It runs through long, humid afternoons for months, so a clean coil, the right refrigerant charge and room to breathe around the outdoor unit decide how long it lasts. That's the core of heat pump service in Salem, and it's most of what our $49 Monarch Check looks at.

Big lots also mean workshops, barns and detached garages. Running ductwork across a yard rarely makes sense; a ductless mini-split usually does. And on a private well, a power outage takes out your water along with your AC. For those homes a Generac standby generator is less of a luxury and more of a plan.

Long, spread-out floor plans bring their own problem: the rooms at the far end of the house run warm because the air runs out of push before it gets there. Before anyone sells you a bigger unit, the ductwork should be measured. When the system itself is worn out, we'll say so and price a replacement in writing.

Questions we get

Questions Salem homeowners ask us.

My house is on a well and septic. Does that change the HVAC work?It changes a few details. The condensate line needs to drain away from the foundation and the septic field, and on a well a power outage leaves you without water as well as air. A standby generator solves both.
Is a heat pump enough for a Salem winter? For most homes, yes. Winters here are mild, and heat pumps in this part of Alabama work hardest in summer. A correctly sized heat pump with backup heat covers the few hard freezes. If yours runs on emergency heat for long stretches, something is wrong and it is worth a diagnostic.
Can you cool my shop or barn without tying into the house?Yes. A ductless mini-split is usually the right answer for a detached building. It runs on its own, and you only condition the space when you are using it.
Salem covers a lot of ground. Do you really come all the way out?Yes. Every part of Salem is in our service area, including the homes at the end of long gravel drives. Same diagnostic price, same written quote.
Are you licensed and insured in Alabama?Yes. Alabama HVAC contractor license No. 2024071, fully insured. Michael holds EPA Universal certification and NATE certification in heat pumps.
Do you offer financing or a military discount? Both. Wisetack financing plus options for homeowners who don't qualify there, subject to credit approval. Military customers get a free service call or 10% off the repair.
