Home / Generators

Authorized Generac dealer · Lee & Russell counties

When the power goes out, the house keeps running.

Storms, ice and hurricane remnants knock out power across East Alabama. A standby generator starts on its own and can keep your heat, air, fridge and well pump going until the lines are back up.

Standby vs. portable

Two very different answers to an outage.

Portable generators have their place. But if you want the house to keep running like normal, here's the real difference.

Whole-home standby

Installed once, starts on its own.

  • Permanently installed outside and wired in through an automatic transfer switch
  • Starts by itself when the power drops, whether or not you're home
  • Runs off your natural gas line or propane tank, so nobody refuels it mid-storm
  • Can be sized to cover the whole house, central heat and air included
  • Runs a scheduled self-test so problems show up before the storm does
Portable

Rolled out, started and fed by hand.

  • Has to be hauled out, started and refueled by hand, usually in bad weather
  • Usually runs on gasoline, which has to be stored and can run short in a long outage
  • Typically powers a few appliances through extension cords or a manual inlet
  • Rarely big enough to run central air or a heat pump
  • Has to stay outdoors and away from windows and doors because of carbon monoxide

The Monarch install

From first visit to first outage, handled.

One team coordinates the whole project, so you're not chasing an electrician, a gas supplier and an inspector yourself.

1

Site visit

We walk the property, look at your electrical panel and fuel source, and find a spot for the unit that meets code.

2

Load calculation

We list what you need powered, from the HVAC to the well pump, and size the generator to your house instead of guessing.

3

Permits & coordination

We pull the permits and coordinate the gas and electrical work, including your utility or propane supplier where needed.

4

Installation

We set the pad and generator, install the transfer switch, and make the fuel and electrical connections.

5

Startup & walkthrough

We commission the system, test it with a simulated outage, and show you how it works and what to expect.

6

Ongoing maintenance

We keep the generator on the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule so it's ready when you need it.

Questions we get

Generator questions, answered straight.

What size generator do I need?

It depends on what you want to keep running. Central air or a heat pump, an electric water heater, a well pump and an electric range add up fast. That's why we do a load calculation on the site visit instead of quoting a size over the phone.

Should I use natural gas or propane?

If the house already has natural gas service, that's usually the simplest option because the supply is continuous. Homes without natural gas can run on propane from a tank on site. The tank has to be big enough for the generator and anything else it feeds, which we plan with your propane provider.

Do I need a permit?

Usually, yes. Standby generators generally need an electrical permit, and the gas connection often needs its own permit and inspection. Requirements vary by city and county. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections.

Where does the generator go?

Outside, on a level pad, with the clearances from windows, doors, vents and property lines that the manufacturer and local code require. We pick a spot on the site visit that meets those rules and keeps the gas and electrical runs as short as practical.

Does a standby generator need maintenance?

Yes. Like any engine, it needs periodic service such as oil, filters and a battery check on the manufacturer's schedule. Most units also run a short self-test on their own so problems show up before an outage does.
